| Received "Padmashree" from
the President of India as recognition for contributions to organic chemistry and the first
Indian to receive the technology award from Third World Academy of Sciences. The only Indian Scientist to train more than 100
research students for their Ph.D. degrees in chemistry from various Indian Universities.
Many of them to-day occupy senior positions in Academic and Research organizations.
First Indian scientist to develop
technologies for more than 50 life saving drugs (including anticancer and anti AIDS) and
helped the Indian pharmaceutical industry in commercializing them at much cheaper costs
compared to international prices. Also credited with more than 30 patents.
Served several international bodies,
committees such as UNDP, World Health Organization, UNEP (Ozone cell), World Bank and
rendered public service to Government of India as Chairman and member of various policy
making bodies.
Delivered several plenary & Invited
lectures at various International symposia. Also delivered more than 100 invited lectures
at various universities and R&D organizations in USA, U.K, Europe, Russia and India.
Recognized as a distinguished organic
chemist from India and received many National and International awards. Follow of the
Third World Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Sciences and Follow of other National
& State Academies.
Established an excellent school in organic
synthesis in the country and undertaken the total synthesis of a wide variety of complex
biologically active molecules that include antibiotics, antitumor agents,
immunosupressants, macrolides, cyclic peptides including vancomycin etc., Published more
than 250 research papers in various international journals.
Nominated to editorial boards of National
and International journals-Bio-organic and Medicinal chemistry letters (1990-95), Journal
of Antibiotics (1990-), Asian Natural Products chemistry since its inception and several
Indian journals.
Over 35 years of experience and leadership
demonstrated by heading the Indian institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), Hyderabad,
with more than 1200 employees and 500 scientists. Prior experience in scientific
management at the National Chemical Laboratory, Pune as Head of the organic chemistry
department with more than 100 scientists. Proved to be the best manager in CSIR and
receive several technology awards year after year.
Only Indian invited to witness the opening
ceremony of Glaxo-Welcome laboratories by her excellency, the Queen of England in April
1995. Collaborated with various International organizations and institutions of USA (NCI)
France, USSR (Russia) etc.,
First successful scientist entrepreneur
establishing AVRA laboratories in 1995, after retirement as Director IICT. Currently leads
AVRA labs which is involved in contract research and custom synthesis for many US based
Pharma & Biotech companies. |
